VWU Volleyball falls to No. 25 Muskingum University in four sets

BALTIMORE, Maryland - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team fell to the Fighting Muskies of No. 25 Muskingum University in four sets on Friday evening on day one of the John's Hopkins Greg "Gio" Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament in Baltimore, MD.

MATCH RECAP
The Marlins started the match of hot taking an early 8-4 lead in the opening set. Muskingum pulled within two points of Virginia Wesleyan a couple of times, 8-6, 12-10, 14-12, and even got as close as 17-16, before VWU went on a 6-0 run taking a 23-16 lead. The Fighting Muskies scored two more points but the Marlins put two more points down to take set one 25-18.

Muskingum came out in set two taking the early 11-3 lead. VWU fought back within three points, 14-11, following an 8-3 run, and knotted the score nine serves later at 17 all after Sydney Collins and Kathryn Yeager block. The Fighting Muskies scored four straight taking a 21-17 lead only for the Marlins to respond with four points of their own to knot the sore once again. Muskingum closed out the set with another four points to win 25-21 and tie the match score at one set each.

MU opened set two early taking a 4-1 lead. VWU trailed by three, 10-7, but the Muskies went on a 7-1 rally to lead 17-8. The Marlins scored a pair of points putting the score at 17-10, but Muskingum closed the set out on an 8-3 to win 25-13. 

The fourth set started with Muskingum opening on a 5-2 run, but Virginia Wesleyan tied the score at six points each after a 4-1 run. The Fighting Muskies took a 12-7 lead after a 5-1 rally, but the Marlins climbed back within one, 12-11, following a 4-0 run of their own. The rest of the set was controlled by Muskingum who scored 13 points to the Marlins three winning 25-14 and taking the match in four sets.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action tomorrow Saturday, Sept. 12, when they wrap up competition in the John's Hopkins Greg "Gio" Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament in Baltimore, MD. VWU will face the No. 19 Panthers of Birmingham-Southern College at 10 AM and follow with a match at 12 PM against the host Blue Jays of No. 6 John's Hopkins University.
