Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team fell to the No. 16 Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday evening in conference action at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA.

Hampden-Sydney found the first score of the match 49 seconds into the contest but Virginia Wesleyan's Mark Sprague answered with an unassisted goal 15 seconds later to knot the score at one all. The teams traded goals again with Nathan Sheirburn scoring off a Joe Rayman pass to knot the score at two all before HSC added a pair to take a 4-2 lead. Trevor Lalande scored off a Cole Maguire pass to pull within a goal, 4-3, but the Tigers put three goals together to pull ahead 7-3. Shayne Smith added a fourth goal for the Marlins scoring right off the face off and Cole Maguire added a fifth with 12 seconds left in the first quarter but Hampden-Sydney added three to their tally leading 10-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Tigers add three to their total while the Marlins added one as the teams headed into the halftime break with the score sitting at 13-6. The lone Marlin goal was scored by Sprague off a pass from Michael Stumpf.
HSC added eight goals to their lead in the third quarter while holding VWU to three as the Tigers took a 21-9 lead into the final quarter. VWU's goals were scored by Lalande, Sprague, and Stumpf all unassisted.
Virginia Wesleyan opened the final 15 minutes with three consecutive goals from Sheirburn, Sprague, and Jack Butcher to put the score at 21-12. In the final six and a half minutes, Hampden-Sydney score four more goals while giving up two to VWU, both from Maguire, as the Tigers took the road win 25-14.
