Volleyball defeats Roanoke Maroons in four sets

SALEM, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated the Maroons of Roanoke College in four sets on Thursday afternoon in ODAC action in Salem, VA.

MATCH RECAP
The Maroons opened the match taking an early 7-3 lead before the Marlins rallied back to lead 10-9. VWU continued on a 7-2 run to take a 17-11 lead but a five-point run by the Maroons pulled RC within a point. Virginia Wesleyan led 20-18 but Roanoke went on a 7-1 run to close out the set winning 25-21.

Virginia Wesleyan opened se two with a 10-5 run but Roanoke answered with a 6-1 rally to knot the score at 11 all. The teams traded point for point throughout the remainder of the set until the Marlins put together three consecutive points to win set two 25-23. 

The teams sat tied at nine all through the early serves but the Maroons pulled ahead 12-10 before the Marlins took a 16-13 lead following a 6-1 run. Roanoke came back to tied the score at 18 all  and he score knotted up six more times before Virginia Wesleyan put three points together on three kills, one from Morgan Ludovici and two from Alexis Davies-Hackenburg, to win set three 27-25.

VWU led 7-4 before RC knotted the score at seven all after three points. The Marlins went on a 10-4 run taking a 17-11 lead and extended the lead to eight points, 20-12, following a short 3-1 run. Roanoke made a late push to trail 21-17 after a 5-1 run, but Virginia Wesleyan closed out the match on a 4-1 run to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Sunday, April 25, when they wrap up the regular season against the Quakers of Guilford College at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. The start time for the match is scheduled for 1 PM.
