Volleyball down Salisbury in straight sets

SALISBURY, Maryland - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team downed the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University in straight sets on Tuesday evening in a non-conference exhibition match in Salisbury, MD.

FIRST SET

  • Virginia Wesleyan began the match taking an early 7-2 lead on two kills, a pair of blocks, and three errors.
  • The Sea Gulls climbed back within two points, 14-12, after SU put down six kills during their 10-7 run.
  • VWU increased its lead back to seven points, 21-14, following four kills, an ace, and two SU errors. 
  • Salisbury scored three in a row forcing a VWU timeout and despite scoring three more points, Virginia Wesleyan scored four to win set one 25-20.

SECOND SET

  • The second set saw the teams sit tied at six-all through the opening 12 serves.
  • The score tied six more times, last at 14 all, before Salisbury took a four-point lead, 19-15 following a 5-1 run. 
  • After a timeout called by the Marlins, VWU knotted the score at 21 following back to back kills by Abigail Mahoney that capped a 6-2 run.
  • The Sea Gulls took a two-point lead, 23-21, before the Marlins scored four straight to close out the set with a 25-23 win.

THIRD SET

  • Salisbury held the early lead to begin the third set ahead 8-6. 
  • VWU came back to take a 16-8 lead following 10 straight points.
  • The Sea Gulls came within five points, 18-13, but the Marlins closed out the set on a 7-2 rally to win the third set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, March 27th, when they travel to Ferrum College for their first doubleheader of the season to take on the University of Lynchburg Hornets and the Panthers of Ferrum in ODAC competition. The Hornets and Marlins will square off first with first serve at 2 PM, while the Marlins will play the Panthers shortly after the first match concludes at 4 PM.
