Volleyball defeats Salisbury in exhibition match

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University in four sets on Friday evening in a scrimmage at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA.

FIRST SET

  • The match began with Salisbury scoring three points off the bat but Virginia Wesleyan countered with a 6-0 run to lead 6-3.
  • The Marlins went on a 5-3 run taking an 11-6 lead but the Sea Gulls came back on a 9-4 rally of their own to knot the score at 15 all.
  • The teams tied the score at 16, 17, and 18-all before Salisbury took a two-point lead, 20-18 on an attack error from Kathryn Yeager.
  • SU held off the Marlins who came within a point, 22-21, to win set one 25-22.

SECOND SET

  • The second set began with the teams trading points before the Marlins took a five-point lead 8-3 on an SU attack error.
  • Virginia Wesleyan increased their lead to 11-points, 16-5, following an 8-2 rally on two kills, a service ace, and five Sea Gull errors.
  • The Marlins led 21-8 and after a pair of Salisbury kills, VWU closed the set scoring four of the last five points to win 25-11.

THIRD SET

  • The third set saw the teams stay pretty even with each other through the early points as VWU led 11-10 midway through the set. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan went on a 5-1 run that put the home team ahead 16-11 after a kill by Kathryn Yeager.
  • The Marlins led grew to eight points, 21-13, after another 5-1 run by VWU which saw kills from Nadia Scott and Yeager.
  • SU added two more points while VWU put up four to win set three 25-15 and take the 2-1 lead in the games.

FOURTH SET

  • Set four was a close game the entire set as both squads were neck-and-neck at four all early on.
  • Salisbury took a 7-4 lead after three straight points but Virginia Wesleyan answered in kind to knot the set at seven all. 
  • The same scenario took place again as SU went up 10-7 but VWU answered with three to tie the game again at 10 all.
  • VWU took a slight lead, 12-11, on a kill by Scott, but Salisbury can back with a 3-0 run taking a 14-12 lead.
  • The Marlins reclaimed the lead, 15-14, following another 3-0 run, however, Salisbury knotted the score at 15 all and went ahead by three points, following a 4-1 run putting the score at 19-16.
  • Virginia Wesleyan battled back to take a 20-19 lead after two SU errors, an Abigail Mahoney kill and a block by Mahoney and Morgan Ludovici.
  • The scoer tied twice more at 20 and 21-all, but four consecutive points by the Marlins ended the game with VWU winning set four 25-21, and the match 3-1.

KEY STATS

  • Freshman Nadia Scott led the Marlins with 12 kills on 40 attack attempts.
  • Haley Sutton and Grace Sweers split time at setter recording 20 and 19 assists respectively.
  • Cara Caruso led the defensive back line with 21 digs while Scott added 13.
