Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan men's lacrosse team fell to the Seahawks of Saint Mary's College of Maryland 19-2 in their season opener on Monday evening at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins move to 0-1 while the Seahawks are now 1-0.
INSIDE THE SCORE
The Seahawks got the scoring started with an unassisted goal two minutes into the game. VWU responded three minutes later with an equalizing goal by Cole Maguire off the assist from Mark Sprague. Before the first quarter ended, Saint Mary's scored four more goals to lead 5-1 heading into the second quarter.
SMCM increased their lead by adding six goals in the second quarter to send both teams into halftime with the score sitting at 11-1.
Saint Mary's came out of the break to score their 12th goal of the game two and a half minutes into the return to action. Virginia Wesleyan found its second goal on an unassisted shot from Michael Stumpf to put the SMCM lead at 10 goals. The Seahawks added three more scores in the third while putting up four more in the fourth to end the game with a 19-2 victory.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Cole Maguire and Michael Stumpf with one goal a piece. Maguire took 11 shots on the day with five on goal. Kyle Leeming started in goal for the Marlins made six saves while giving up eight goals before coming out for injury. Allen Shaw came in to take up the role between the pipes and played 32 minutes giving up 10 goals and making eight saves.
SAINT MARY'S LEADERS
The Seahawks were led by Abe Hubbard with five goals and two assists while Dominic Venanzi added three goals and an assist. DJ Walker played the opening half in goal for the Seahawks and gave up just one goal while making six saves.
