The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins men's lacrosse team fell to 9-5 on the season following a 21-10 loss to Hampden-Sydney (6-7, 4-2 ODAC) on Wednesday evening, April 8, in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia. The Marlins move to 3-4 in ODAC play after facing a strong conference opponent.
Virginia Wesleyan was led offensively by
Thomas Lewis IV and
Ben Andrews, who each recorded three goals.
Ethan Smith and
Zachary Dupill also added two goals in the effort. The Marlins found more offensive rhythm in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, but were unable to overcome an early deficit.
Hampden-Sydney came out firing in the first quarter, scoring nine unanswered goals to take early control of the game. Despite solid defensive efforts later on, the Marlins were unable to slow the Tigers' momentum in the opening period.
Virginia Wesleyan responded in the second quarter, getting on the board with a goal from Dupill. Lewis IV added two goals in the period, while Andrews contributed another to give the Marlins four goals before halftime. However, Hampden-Sydney continued to capitalize offensively, taking a 13-4 lead into the break.
The Marlins continued to battle in the third quarter, but were held to limited scoring opportunities as Hampden-Sydney extended its lead.
Virginia Wesleyan showed resilience in the fourth quarter, putting together its strongest offensive stretch of the game with six goals. Dupill, Smith, Andrews, and Lewis IV all contributed during the run, highlighting the team's persistence and ability to generate offense late in the contest.
The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins men's lacrosse team will return to action on Saturday, April 11, at 6:30 PM, hosting Bridgewater College for Senior Day in an ODAC matchup.
