VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan men's and women's track and field finished strong on day two of the inaugural Kenneth Giles Norfolk State Invitational at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex in Virginia Beach, VA. Nearly all the Marlins that competed today broke school, career, or personal records highlighted again by
Geni Roberts who broke his own mark in the men's long jump.
MEET INFORMATION
The meet was the third for the Marlins of the 2021 season. The competition was a healthy mix of Division I, II, and III competitors.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
The Marlins put together fast heats on day two of the Kenneth Giles Norfolk State Invitational as they were racing against athletes from Old Dominion University, University of Richmond, Norfolk State University, UNC Pembroke, Barton College, William Peace University, and more.
The 200M dash began the day and Shirell Washington and Casey Stedman both posted new personal bests on the women's side with times of 27.55 and 29.04 respectively. Aaron Johnson shaved .3 seconds off his previous best (23.59), while Julius Jacobs took a half second off his time (24.87), and Ki'Van Alston came down almost a full second (25.08). This was Andrew Powers first running of the 200M Dash. Powers also ran his first 400M Dash finishing with a time of 55.50.
In the women's 400M Dash, Casey Stedman came down four-tenths of a second from 1:06.44 to 1:06.07. Niya Crocker and Grace Adams crossed the line just after their PRs.
Shirell Washington set a new mark in the women's long jump with a distance of 4.74M but missed the fianl heat, while Jaylyn Lane made the finals and finished with a distance of 4.87M to claim seventh.
On the men's side of things, Isaiah Luckey set a new PR in the 800M with his time of 2:05.59. In the Mile all three Marlins set new personal records led by Ethan Cravens who broke his own personal best of 4:54.79 set last weekend at the East Coast Invitational by shaving nine seconds off his time setting a new mark of 4:45.86. Isaiah Luckey and Colton Spence also set new PR's in the mile with times of 4:46.84 and 4:56.33 respectively.
Moving into the field events, Geni Roberts set a new school record in the long jump with a mark of 7.24M, breaking his own record of 7.07M set last weekend. The 7.24M distance put the Ridgely, MD native in third place behind an athlete from Lincoln University (Pa.) and an unattached athlete from NSU. Michael Gatling took 11th with a distance of 6.10M, Aaron Johnson finished 14th with his distance of 5.79M and Cory Alston finished 17th with a mark of 5.54M.
Rounding up the meet were the Marlin throwers who competed in the men's shot put. CJ Govan led the VWU athletes with a seventh place finish and a mark of 12.12M. Andrew Taylor, Keive Fyffe, and Greg Osipov finished 10th through 12th with Fyffe setting a new PR of 9.09M.

The Marlins return to action on March 13 for the outdoor season. They will travel to Salisbury, MD to take on the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University.
