Late rally by Guilford pushes Quakers past Marlins

Box Score GREENSBORO, North Carolina - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team fell to the Quakers of Guilford College 69-65 on Saturday evening at the Ragan-Brown Field House in Greensboro, NC.

INSIDE THE SCORE
Guilford took the early lead scoring the first four points before the Marlins claimed a one-point lead 5-4 after a three pointer by Eric Rowland and a layup by Tim Fisher. GC put up another four points going up 8-5 but a three from Tyree Golston tied the score at eight all and he converted a four-point play with a free throw to give VWU a 9-8 lead. The Quakers took a 13-9 lead after knotting the score at nine all but back to back three pointers by the Marlins put VWU up 15-13 with 12:22 left in the half. The teams tie the score up again at 15 all and 18 all before the Marlins took a 21-18 lead off a Corey Pelham three. VWU went up 26-22 courtesy of a Fisher jumper and a Jordan Crump three pointer, but the Quakers fought back to even up the score at 26 all with 6:20 to play. Guilford took the lead 29-26 but Virginia Wesleyan tied things up at 29 and reclaimed the lead 32-29 (3:16) following back to back three pointers, one each by Anthony Jackson and Miles Wallace. GC closed out the final three minutes of the first half on a 14-5 rally taking a 43-37 lead into the break. 

A three pointer by the Quakers put Guilford ahead by nine points, 46-37, but the Marlins rallied back to knot the score at 51 all following a 14-4 run and continued to take a 59-51 lead with 8:52 remaining in the game following a three from Wallace. Guilford took seven minutes to come back an tie the score at 65 all after a 14-6 rally and completed the comeback scoring four points in the final two minutes while holding the Marlins off the scoreboard to win 69-65 in come from behind fashion. 

MARLIN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Anthony Jackson with 12 points off the bench while Tim Fisher added 10 points and nine rebounds. Corey Pelham, Tyree Golston, and Miles Wallace each tallied nine points. 

QUAKER LEADERS
Guilford was led by Julius Burch with 20 points and nine rebounds. Liam Ward added 14 points and nine rebounds as well. Tyler Dearman added 12 points while Jaylen Gore contributed 10. 

UP NEXT
The Marlins return to their home court at TowneBank Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 8th, for their final home game of the 2021 season. Virginia Wesleyan hosts Salisbury at 7 PM for a non-conference contest against the Sea Gulls.
