VWU Volleyball remains undefeated in ODAC play with a three set sweep over Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated the Hornets of Shenandoah University in three sets on Friday evening at  the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center in Winchester, VA.

MATCH RECAP
The Hornets opened the first set taking the lead early holding a three-point advantage 9-6, and 12-9, before the Marlins came back to tie and take the lead at 15-14. The squads traded points and knotted the score up four times, last at 18 all, before VWU scored back to back points taking a 20-18 lead. SU stayed within one point through the remainder of the set until a setter dump by Alexis Davies-Hackenberg gave the Marlins a 25-23 set one win. 

After trading the first 20 points each team sitting at 10 points apiece, Shenandoah scored five points in a row taking a 15-10 lead. Virginia Wesleyan rallied to score six points knotting the score again at 16-all. SU scored three more going up 19-16, but VWU responded with five in a row to reclaim the lead 21-19. The Hornets came back to tie the score at 23 all but the Marlins put down the last two to win set two 25-23.

The Marlins came out in set three with guns ablazing, taking a 14-2 lead right out of the gate. A pair of Shenandoah points broke up another five Virginia Wesleyan points as they held a 15-point advantage with the score sitting at 19-4. SU closed the gap to 10 points, trailing 21-11, but VWU scored four in a row to close the set with a 25-11 win and taking the match in three sets.

UP NEXT
The Marlins get back on the court again on Saturday, Oct. 9, when they travel to Stevenson, MD, for a tri-match with the Stevenson University Mustangs and the Catholic University Cardinals. The Marlins will face the Cardinals at 1 PM and follow with the Mustangs at 3 PM.
