Marlins go 1-1 at the CNU Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team split their Friday evening doubleheader against Marymount University and Christopher Newport University at the Freeman Center in Newport News, VA. The Marlins defeated the Saints of Marymount and fell to the Captains of CNU in four sets.

MATCH RECAP
After the Marlins scored the first two points the Saints went on a 4-0 run taking a 4-2 lead. VWU responded with a 4-0 run of their own to lead 6-4 before MU came back to knot the score at nine all. Virginia Wesleyan pulled away scoring six consecutive points to lead 15-9. Marymount pulled back within three, 19-16, and continued to fight back ti knot the score at 21 all. VWU put an end to MU's run closing the opening set with four consecutive points to win 25-21. 

The Marlins came out in set two taking an early 10-4 lead. VWU maintained their six point lead throughout most of the match but MU pulled within four, 19-15, but the Marlins fought off the Saints with a 6-2 run to take set two 25-17. 

VWU found themselves trailing 4-2 early in set three but came back to take a 10-4 lead following an eight point rally. Marymount came back to knot the score at 12 all but Virginia Wesleyan pulled ahead to take a four-point lead, 16-12 . The teams traded points but VWU managed to hold the lead 19-16 and closed out the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-18 and take the match in three sets.

MATCH RECAP
The teams opened the first set with a pair of points each before CNU went ahead 6-3. VWU pulled within one, 9-8, but the Captains scored four in a row going up 13-8. The Marlins fought back to knot the score at 17 all and from there the teams went back and forth with neither team gaining the advantage on the other as they played well past the 25 point requirement as the final score ended at 36-34 with the Captains holding the advantage at the final whistle. 

The Marlins came out in set two taking an early 5-2 lead but the Captains came back to tie the score at eight all. VWU pulled ahead by six points, 18-12 after a 10-4 run, but CNU fought back to climb within three, 23-20, however the Marlins held off the Captains to win set two 25-20. 

The squads were neck and neck through the opening services sitting tied at six all before Virginia Wesleyan pulled ahead 9-6 and then again 12-9 but Christopher Newport knotted the score up at 12 all. The teams went back and forth the remainder of the set with neither gaining a significant lead until the Captains claimed the final two points to win set three 28-26. 

CNU led the fourth set 5-2 early but VWU battled back taking a 7-6 lead. The Captains tied the score at eight all and went on to lead 13-9 following a 7-2 run but the Marlins came back to knot the score at 13 all. Christopher Newport gained a 19-16 advantage however Virginia Wesleyan again came back to even up the score at 20 all. The Captains closed out the set one a 5-1run to win the final set 25-21 and winning the match 3-1.

Virginia Wesleyan awaits news of whom they will host in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament as they enter the post season as the third seed in the ODAC standings.
