Marlins comeback to take three sets from NC Wesleyan to win 3-1

ROCKY MOUNT, North Carolina - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team came back after dropping the first set to defeat the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College in four sets on Wednesday evening in Rocky Mount, NC.

MATCH RECAP
The Marlins opened the match with a 5-2 run but saw their lead disappear as the Battling Bishops came back to take a 9-7 lead. VWU knotted the score at nine all, but NCWC went on a 7-3 run taking a 16-12 advantage. The Battling Bishops put together five consecutive points to go ahead 21-12 and closed out set one scoring four of the last seven points to win the opening game 25-15. 

The teams started the second set going back and forth to sit tied 4-4 after the opening services. VWU went on a 5-1 run taking a 9-5 lead but NCWC rallied back taking a 10-9 lead after scoring five-consecutive points. The Marlins countered with a 7-1 rally to lead 16-11 however the Battling Bishops pulled back within two, 18-16, following a 5-2 run. Virginia Wesleyan closed out the second set on a 7-2 rally winning 25-18 and evening the match at one set each. 

VWU and NCWC were knotted at seven all through the first 14 services. The Marlins took a 10-7 lead but the scored was tied up at 11 all by the Battling Bishops after a 4-1 run. Virginia Wesleyan went ahead 16-12, however, North Carolina Wesleyan fought back to take an 18-17 after going on a 6-1 run. The teams were neck and neck through the next 11 services as the score sat tied at 23 all. VWU managed to put down the last two points to take set three 25-23.

NCWC opened the third set with a 5-2 run but VWU responded with eight points taking a 10-6 lead. The Battling Bishops pulled within four, 13-9, but the Marlins pulled ahead by seven, 16-9, following a three point run. Virginia Wesleyan held on to their lead throughout the remainder of the set to win 25-17 and take the match in four sets.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, October 23, when they return home to TowneBank Arena for a tri-match with the Bridgewater College Eagles and the Salisbury University Sea Gulls. The Marlins and Eagles take to the court first at 11 AM. with the Eagles and Sea Gulls pairing up at 1 PM, and the day wraps up with the Marlins taking on the Sea Gulls for the second time this season at 3 PM. The four Marlins seniors will be honored prior to the start of the 11 AM match for Senior Day.
