Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team fell to the Generals of Washington and Lee University 11-10 in the first ODAC conference home game of the 2020 season at Kenneth Perry Field at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins move to 3-6, 0-1 on the season while Generals are now 7-1, 1-0 overall.
INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Marlins posting a lone run in the bottom of the first as Miles Christian came home on a double down the leftfield line from Matt Dagostino. Washington and Lee responded in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs that scored on a double to right-center from Colin Liebe to give the Generals a 2-1.
Virginia Wesleyan tied the score at two-all in the bottom half of the fourth as Zach Burkhart drove Connor Hall home on a double to left-center field.
The fifth and sixth innings saw both teams put five runs on the board, three in the fifth and two in the sixth for each team, as the squads entered the seventh inning knotted at seven-all. Each team put up one run in the seventh inning and W&L broke the tie in the top of the eighth with three runs to go ahead 11-8.
The Marlins fought to stay alive in the bottom of the ninth as they put two runs on the board but left two batters on the bases as they fell 11-10 to W&L.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Miles Christian with three runs on four hits and two-RBI in five at-bats. Matt Dagostino recorded one run on three hits while driving in three RBI's in six at-bats.
Jacob Pilarski threw 4.2 innings giving up five runs on six hits while striking out six batters and walking one.
WASHINGTON and LEE LEADERS
The Generals were led by Bryce Burnette with three runs on four hits and two-RBI in five at-bats. Jackson Thigpen (W: 3-0) threw 4.2 innings and gave up five runs on 10 hits and struck out four batters.
KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the eighth inning when the Generals took an 11-8 lead over the Marlins. The lead was just enough that VWU could not catch as W&L won 11-10.
