Marlins fall to Captains of CNU

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the Captains of Christopher Newport University 19-3 on Wednesday evening at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins move to 0-4 on the season, while the Captains are now 2-1.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with CNU finding two quick goals in the opening three minutes. Virginia Wesleyan answered with their first goal of the game on an unassisted shot from Camryn Gavula six minutes into action to draw within one goal as the Captains led 2-1. CNU put two more goals on the board to give some separation as they led 4-1 at the 19:55 mark. Nearly a minute later, Avery Frangelli scored for the Marlins cutting the led to two. Christopher Newport took off from there clsoing out the first half on an eight goal run leading 12-2 at the halftime horn.

Tori Manahan got the Marlins on the board first in the second half with an unassisted goal at the 26:26 mark that put the score at 12-3. Unfortunately after that the Captains took control from there scoring seven unanswered goals going on to win 19-3.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Avery Frangelli, Tori Manahan, and Camryn Gavula with one goal apiece. Gavula led with four draw controls while keeper Jordan Moilanen led in ground balls with four. Moilanen (L, 0-4) picked up the loss playing 35:14 minutes between the pipes giving up 12 goals on 22 shots faced while making ten saves. Mike Hairston played 24:46 minutes in the net and made nine saves on 16 shots faced while allowing seven goals.

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT LEADERS
The Captains were led by Cat Leighty with four goals and two assists on eight shots. Kendall Krause added a hattrick while four other Captains scored two goals each. Kaitlyn Ready (W, 1-0) picked up the win playing 51:07 minutes in net making three saves on six shots while giving up three goals. 

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the final 15:30 minutes of the first half when the Captains went on an eight goal run taking the 10-goal lead. 

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, March 7, when they host the Coast Guard Academy women's lacrosse team for an afternoon contest at Birdsong Field. First draw is set for 4 PM between the Marlins and Bears.
