No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan upset by Emory & Henry 94-89 in double overtime

EMORY, Virginia - The No. 13 VWU men's basketball team was upset by the Wasps of Emory & Henry College 94-89 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon in an ODAC weekend contest in Emory, Va. The Marlins move to 19-4 overall and 11-3 in ODAC competition, while the Wasps are now 6-17 and 3-11. 

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the teams trading baskets with E&H leading 5-4 before a three-pointer and a layup by Jordan White gave the Marlins a 9-5 lead with 16:12 to play in the first. The Wasps countered with a 5-0 run taking a 10-9 lead that they held until the 14-minute mark. The two squads continued trading baskets over the next four minutes and saw the game tie twice, at 13 and 18 all. A three by White knotted the score at 18 all and started a 7-0 run for the Marlins that put them ahead 22-18 with 8:48 on the clock. The teams went back and forth in the remaining minutes of the half with neither team gaining more than a four-point lead as the score sat tied a 36 all at the halftime horn. 

Emory & Henry came out of the half on an 8-0 run taking a 44-36 lead over Virginia Wesleyan before Daniel Spencer hit a jumper at 15:24. Another 5-0 spurt over the next two minutes gave the Wasps their largest lead of the game at 11 points, 49-38. VWU fought their way back to knot the score at 59 all following a 21-10 run by the Marlins that spanned six minutes. The Wasps went up 68-61 but the Marlins again came back to knot the game at 72 all and took the lead on a layup by Tim Fisher but a layup by Malcolm Morgan tied the score at 74 all to force overtime.

Virginia Wesleyan went up by five, 79-74, by the halfway point after Fisher converted a pair of free throws. The Wasps took a one-point lead, 80-79, and Spencer answered with a jumper to take the lead 81-80 but that lead was short-lived as E&H answered with another basket to lead 82-81. Molden hit a jumper with 47 seconds left putting the score at 84-81 but Fisher came in clutch hitting a three-pointer seven seconds later knotting the game at 84 all forcing a second overtime period.

White hit a three to start the second OT period but Emory & Henry scored eight straight going ahead 92-89 with 1:14 to play. Jacob Martin converted a pair of free throws with 25 seconds on the clock sealing the win for the Wasps who upset the Marlins 94-89.

NO. 13 VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Tim Fisher with 27 points while Jordan White scored 20 joining Fisher in a 20=point game. Daniel Spencer and Corey Pelham also added double-digits with 14 and 12 points respectively. Spencer led the Marlins with 13 rebounds with Fisher adding eight and Pelham seven.

EMORY & HENRY LEADERS
The Wasps were led by Colin Colden with 30 points after shooting 13-of-26 from the field. Jordan Grant added 20 points and Anthony Williams put up 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the second overtime period when the Wasps went on an 8-0 run that put the game out of reach for the Marlins.

UP NEXT
No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan returns to the friendly confines of the Jane P. Batten Student Center for their final two home games of the regular season. VWU will host Shenandoah on February 19 at 7 p.m. and follow on Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m., by hosting the Royals of Eastern Mennonite in the regular-season finale.
