Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team defeated the Generals of Washington and Lee University 82-74 on Saturday afternoon in the Jane P. Batten Student Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The Marlins move to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in ODAC competition, while the Generals are now 10-4 and 2-3.
GAME INFORMATION
The game was the second consecutive win over an ODAC team this week. The win puts the Marlins in a three-way tie for second in the conference standings.
INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Generals putting a quick four points to lead 4-3 over the Marlins a minute and a half into the game. Virginia Wesleyan went on a 13-3 run capped by a three from Corey Pelham to take a nine-point lead over Washington and Lee by the 14-minute mark. Another run for the Marlins increased their lead to 15 points, 24-9, with 11:38 until halftime. The Generals used the remaining time before the break to eliminate the Marlin advantage and knot the score at 37 all with a minute to play and took the lead on a pair of free throws sending the teams into halftime with W&L leading 39-37.
The teams came out of the halftime break trading baskets and the lead through the first four minutes of the second half. Three ties and three lead changes occurred before the Marlins took a one-point lead, 49-48, on a jump shot by Tim Fisher at the 16:24 mark. A 9-0 run by the Marlins gave VWU an 11-point lead that they held on to until the 9:50 point. Three free-throws for W&L brought the point-spread to eight points but the Marlins were able to keep their lead between seven to 10 points the remainder of the game to win 82-74.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
Corey Pelham led VWU with 18 points while Daniel Spencer tallied 16, Percy Burt had 14 and Tim Fisher added 13 en route to the win. Fisher had a game-high 12 rebounds.
WASHINGTON & LEE LEADERS
The Generals were led by Kevin Dennin and William Brueggeman with 16 and 12 points respectively. Mark Lamendola and Sam Wise also tallied double-digits with 10 points apiece.
KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came during a seven-minute window, 16:24 - 9:50, where the Marlins scored nine unanswered points to open up an 11 point lead.
