Volleyball Drops Two on Final Day of Mary Washington Quad

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team dropped both of its matches Saturday afternoon at the Mary Washington Tournament. The Marlins dropped their first game 3-0 to Washington and Lee before falling by the same score to host Mary Washington. With the day's results, the Marlins move to 9-3 on the season.

MATCH 1: W&L - 3 VWU - 0 (25-7, 25-16, 31-29)

After a slow start through the first two sets, the Marlins battled to keep the match going. Virginia Wesleyan had plenty of opportunities in the set, as they reached match point three separate times but were unable to close it out.

Amber Matalus was the big threat for VWU as she topped the team with 10 kills. Haley Sutton and Meghan Wood split setting duties as they racked up 16 and 12 assists, respectively.

Defensively, Alyssa Taylor led the squad with 16 digs.

MATCH 2: UMW - 3  VWU - 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-17)

A couple of late Eagle service streaks were the demise of the Marlins as the two teams were even for a majority of each set. Offensively, Matalus once again shouldered the duties but was helped by Greta Coss as both players finished with nine kills.

Volleyball will return to action again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the team takes on Eastern Mennonite on the road.
