FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team defeated the University of Mary Washington, 72-60, on the road Wednesday evening. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 6-1 on the season while the Eagles slide to 6-2.

Mary Washington jumped out to an early lead as they scored four of the game's first five baskets. The Marlins stormed back though, eventually taking a 14-12 lead as Kelvin Nicholson cashed in a lay up with 12:26 left in the first. The teams would exchange buckets for a bit but over the last seven minutes, the Eagles went on an 11-2 run and would carry a 30-26 lead into the locker room.

The Mary Washington lead would only last two minutes into the second stanza as Tyree Golston nailed two jumpers over the first moments to erase the deficit. The Marlins would go on to maintain a slight lead with the Eagles pulling within a single possession but a pair of Corey Pelham 3-pointers near the halfway mark helped create separation that would last until the game's final buzzer.

The Marlin starters accounted for all but 11 points, with four of the five reaching double-digits. Tim Fisher topped everyone with a 16-point performance. Golston and Pelham were not far behind as they cashed in 14 and 13, respectively. Jordan White would also pitch in 11.

Underneath the hoop, Daniel Spencer produced a solid game as he reeled in 12 boards. Percy Burt also crashed the glass as he came away with 11. Spencer would also pick up five dimes along the way.

Men's basketball returns to action again at 3 p.m. on Saturday as the team travels to Guilford for a road contest with the Quakers.
