Men's Basketball Comes Out Victorious in TowneBank Cross Bay Rivalry Game

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team took down Christopher Newport University, 74-64, Sunday afternoon in the TowneBank Cross Bay Rivalry game. With the win, the Marlins improve to 8-1 while the Captains slide to 7-4.

After opening up with the first six points, the Marlins and Captains played a tight game with just a one-point differential separating them at the 15 minute mark. Over the next five minutes though, the home team used a small 8-0 run to go up 18-9. They continued to build upon that lead going up by as much as 15 but ended the half with the 39-28 lead over CNU.

That 11-point lead stayed strong over the first ten minutes of the second, but the Captains began to creep back. Over the next two minutes, it became just a two possession contest but then entered Tim Fisher. The forward stole the ball in the back court and finished with a dunk to go up six. He then hit a fade-away at the shot clock buzzer to help increase that lead. With momentum on their side, the Marlins were able to finish it out, earning a big win over their Cross Bay Rival.

Fisher had another incredible game in the low post, picking up a double-double with 26 points and 11 boards. Pelham used a solid first half to finish up with a total of 20 points. Also chipping in on the day was Tyree Golston, who dropped 11.

Men's basketball returns to action again on December 29th as will play in the Albright Holiday Tournament. The team will take on Cabrini University in the opening round, with tip-off coming at 2 p.m.
