Men's Basketball Hits Century Mark in Season Opener

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team opened up its season with a 109-61 victory over Pfieffer University on Saturday in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. With the result, the Marlins move to 1-0 on the year while the Falcons drop to 0-1.

The Marlins dominated right from the get-go, going up 7-0 in the first two minutes. Over the next ten minutes, a 20-4 run widened the lead as the Marlins took advantage of every opportunity they were given. At the half, Virginia Wesleyan held a comfortable 61-22 lead, shooting 55.6% from the field all while causing 18 Falcon turnovers. The second half spoke much of the same as the Marlins put up their most points since a 114-86 win over the Apprentice School in November of 2017.

Scoring came from all over the floor as the team finished with a shooting percentage of 53.2 and had 14 different players record a point. Leading the charge was senior transfer Daniel Spencer as he tallied a team-high 25 points. Also reaching the 20-point mark were Corey Pelham (21) and Tim Fisher (20). Percy Burt aided in the effort as he collected 10 on the day.

Virginia Wesleyan did well to distribute the ball as well, finishing with 21 assists. Pelham led the team in that statistic with five while Evan Tebay and Spencer registered three each.

On the glass, Fisher was dominant as he hauled in 12 to clinch the double-double. He would add a pair of blocks to go along with that as well.

Men's basketball will return to action again at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday as the team hosts William Peace University in the Batten Center
