Volleyball Breaks Program Win Record With Playoff Win Over Roanoke

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team dropped #7 Roanoke in straight sets (25-17, 25-11, 25-19) in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship Wednesday evening played in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. With the win, the Marlins improve to 26-7, marking the most wins in program history.

Sarah Brush got the Marlins off to an early start as she served five straight times to open up the frame. The Marlins continued to expand upon the lead, using five blocks to eventually take it 25-17. The second set saw another serve streak open the floodgates as Haley Sutton put seven straight balls into play, creating a quick 8-2 lead. Virginia Wesleyan's offense then went to work as the team dropped 12 kills at a .417 attack percentage to close out the middle stanza. The third set was played a bit closer with the score tied at 19-19 but five straight serves from Meghan Wood would help the Marlins complete the sweep.

Amber Matalus had a great offensive day as she topped the court with 13 kills, registering a kill percentage of .650. The senior broke the 1,000 kill mark for her career as well. Lauren Topper would aid in the effort with six kills.

At the net, the home team's defense was outstanding as the Marlins put up 21 block assists on the night. Matalus, Elizabeth Britton and Sydney Collins all chipped in five while Greta Coss ended with three.

Wood and Sutton nearly split the setting duties as they ended with 14 and 13 assists, respectively.

The Marlins will return to action at on Friday as the team will square off against #3 Guilford. That match will take place at top-seeded Randolph-Macon.
