Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University baseball took care of business on day one of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship, downing Guilford twice Friday afternoon at Kenneth R. Perry Field. The Marlins took it to the Quakers, 9-0, in game one before holding on for a 4-1 victory in game two. With the wins the Marlins improve to 27-12 on the season while Guilford finishes out its year with a record of 20-20-1.
GAME 1: VWU - 9 GUILFORD - 1
The Marlins got up early, plating two in the opening frame. Brandon Kussmaul led off with a walk and was scored on a long double by Corey King in the next at-bat. Two batters later, Zack Clark singled to bring home King, doubling the Marlin lead.
Run scoring would go quiet for a bit but would pick up again in the fifth as the Marlins increased their lead by five. Randy Neisz led off with a single and a Clark single up the middle would put runners at the corners. A walk would then load the bases allowing Deon hammond to collect an RBI on a fielder's choice. Following that, Daniel Petro would pick up an RBI with a single to left that allowed Clark to reach. With bases loaded once more, the Quakers would walk in a run to make it 6-0. The final run would come by way of Kussmaul who singled through the left side to score Petro.
VWU's last two runs would come by way of a Brady Fallon solo shot over the left field fence and a Quaker error in the eighth.
Jacob Pilarski had a stellar outing on the bump, going the distance en route to his 10th win of the year (10-0). The sophomore struck out six along the way, not allowing a single earned run.
GAME 2: VWU - 4 GUILFORD - 1
Much like game one, it was the Marlins who got on the board first. After King was hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a wild pitch, Pilarski dished out a doubled from the designated hitter spot to put the Marlins up 1-0 in the first.
Scoring would halt for a while until Fallon reached home on a wild pitch in the seventh. Clark would then add two insurance run in the eighth as a double plated a pair Marlin runners.
Chance Pauley took to the hill for the home squad, tossing a scoreless 6.2 innings. A bit a situational pitching would put Andrew Lowe in with two outs in the seventh and the junior would have no problems as he K-ed the sole batter he faced. Glen Pizzanello would toss the final two frames, fanning five as he closed out the victory.
Baseball will now head to Lynchburg where it will compete in a four team double-elimination tournament to determine the ODAC Champion.
