Second Half Woes Lead to Men's Lacrosse Loss

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team fell, 17-9, to Shenandoah on the road Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Marlins move to 3-9 on the year and 1-5 in conference play. Shenandoah improves to 6-6 on the season (2-3 ODAC).

A Greg Gaetano goal would be the first mark on the board for either team, coming at 10:50 in the opening period. The Hornets answered back though with a three-goal run to gain the lead. A goal from each team in the final minute would put the score at 4-2 going into the second. The tides turned in the Marlins favor this stanza, as they scored four-straight to regain the lead. A Hornet goal before the horn would give the away side a one-goal advantage going into half time.

In the second half, Shenandoah gained momentum on the offensive end, piling in five goals in the third and seven in the fourth. VWU bookended the third with goals and had one in the fourth, but it wasn't enough.

Gaetano led all Marlins with three goals on the afternoon. He was aided by Joe Couture who netted two and helped on three more.

Cory Austin played all 60 minutes in net, racking up 17 saves in the process.

Men's lacrosse will return to action Saturday as the team hosts Lynchburg for a 1 p.m. battle.
