Baseball Splits With No.14 SU; Finish With Most ODAC Wins in Nine Years

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team split with No. 14 Shenandoah on its final day of the regular season at Kenneth R. Perry Field. The Marlins used a walk off effort in the 11th to secure a 6-5 victory in game one before falling, 7-5, in a tight battle during game two. With the results, the Marlins finish the regular season with a 25-12 record, going 15-5 in conference action.

GAME 1: VWU - 6 SHEN - 5 (11 Inn.)

It was a Hornet error in the bottom of the 11th inning that allowed two runners to reach home. Corey King got the frame going with a single that turned into a double as the left fielder mishandled the ball. Randy Neisz was then walked to bring up Zack Clark, who was looking at a sacrifice bunt opportunity. Upon bunting the ball, the Shenandoah pitcher attempted to make the play at third rather than getting the out at first. He overthrew the toss, ending the game as both King and Neisz were able to cross the plate.

Things got started in the third inning as the Hornets put up three in the top. Virginia Wesleyan answered back with a run of its own as Brandon Kussmaul collected an RBI with a single up the middle.

Scoring resumed in the seventh beginning with Shenandoah putting up another run. The Marlins once again came back though, returning the favor with three of their own. Kussmaul picked up another RBI as he singled to drive in Jonathan Rivera. Thee squad then drove in two more runs on hit-by-pitches as the bases were loaded.

Not factoring in the decision was sophomore Jacob Pilarski, who struck out seven batters over 8.1 innings. Glen Pizzanello picked up the win, tossing the final 2.2 frames.

GAME 2: SHEN - 7 VWU - 5

The first inning spoke loudly for both squads as each put up multiple runs. Shenandoah got themselves on top quickly, putting up five in the top of the frame. The Marlins battled back to get within two though, beginning with a Pilarski two run shot. Brady Fallon would later collect an RBI as he singled in Clark from second.

In the fourth, VWU would knot it back up at five a piece. With runners on the corner, Dylan Gentry singled into left field to score one and later King picked up an RBI single as well.

Shenandoah continued to apply pressure though, plating two more in the seventh innings. The Marlins had runners get on, including two in the final frame, but were unable to send them across home plate.

Nick Bay opened up the game, but after allowing five runs, was replaced by Chance Pauley. The senior would hurl seven innings, fanning five in the process. Jay Crusemire and Andrew Lowe would each go .2 hitless innings to close out the tilt.

Baseball will now just wait for the other conference contests to finish to see who they will host next Saturday for the first round of the ODAC Championship.
