Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team split its doubleheader with Lynchburg on Saturday at Kenneth R. Perry Field. The Marlins came out victorious in game one by a score of 6-2 before falling 8-7 in extra innings during game two.
GAME 1: VWU - 6 LC - 2
The Marlins got things going as they broke onto the scoreboard with a two-run second. Brandon Kussmaul got the ball rolling as a single through the right side allowed Zack Burkhart to reach home. Two batters later, Randy Neisz sent a single through the right side that drove home Kussmaul.
Over the next two innings, VWU would plate two to increase its lead to 4-0. Jordan Sprouse picked up an RBI single in the third followed by a Kussmaul solo shot in the fourth. The final Marlin run came via Hornet error as Dylan Gentry crossed on a mistake by the second baseman.
Jacob Pilarski picked up the win on the mound as he tossed 7.0 innings allowing only a single run to cross. Nick Bay and Andrew Lowe teamed up to close out the eighth and Glen Pizzanello took care of the final frame.
GAME 2: VWU - 7 LC - 8 (11 Inn.)
Corey King got the Marlins on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the bottom of the first but the Hornets would put up four in the first two frames. VWU would cut the lead to one in the third, as a Neisz groundout would plate one and an error would bring home another, but Lynchburg piled in three more in the fourth.
Down 7-3 after four, the Marlins would use its heavy bats to come back to tie it. Pilarski sent a ball over the fence to lead off the sixth, decreasing the Hornet lead by one. King then responded similarly as he homered to lead off the seventh. The final two runs came via a Gentry home run that plated two in the eighth.
Neck-and-neck going into extras, a balk call would bring home the eventual game-winning run for Lynchburg.
Baseball will return at 3 p.m. on Tuesday as the squad heads to Methodist for a doubleheader with the Monarchs.
