Baseball sweeps Bridgewater with pair of 11–1 victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team remained perfect (8-0) in ODAC play and improved their record to 16-7 with two 11-1 victories over Bridgewater College.

Game 1

The Marlins wasted no time getting on the board as Corey King smacked a double with the bases loaded to put the Marlins ahead 3-0 in the second inning and they never looked back.

Bridgewater was able to score a run off of Jacob Pilarski in the bottom of the third, but that was the only run the Eagles were able to score all game. Pilarski (6-0) earned his 6th win of the season going seven innings, allowing one run, on four hits, while striking out four. The sophomore improved his ERA to 1.66. Andrew Lowe and Jonathan Rivera each tossed an inning of scoreless relief.

The squad responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to put the game out of reach. The inning was highlighted by a Brandon Kussmaul triple that scored Austin Obenour. Corey King then singled Kussmaul in.

King (4), Kussmaul (2), Randy Neisz (2), Jordan Sprouse (2), and Obenour all registered RBIs. The Marlins also stole eight bases en route to the victory.

Game 2

Chance Pauley got the nod for the Marlins in Game 2 and picked up right where Pilarski left off. The senior hurled 7 innings allowing four hits, one run, and striking out three. Pauley improved to 3-1 on the season.

Bridgewater starter Jacob Benfield (2-1) kept the Marlins hitters at bay until Brandon Kussmaul connected for a three run home run into left center field that scored Brady Fallon and Austin Obenour. Kussmaul finished the game with four RBI.

The Marlins were able to take advantage of walks and Eagles' errors to score two runs in the 7th inning and six runs in the 8th inning. Corey King connected for a double and two RBI in the 8th. King finished the day with three RBI.

Jay Crusemire struck out two in his one inning of relief while Glen Pizzanello tossed a perfect 9th inning to secure the Marlin sweep.

The defense turned three double plays to stymie any Bridgewater momentum that started to build.

VWU returns to action at home on April 4th against Hampden-Sydney. First pitch is slated for 3:00p.m.
