Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team picked up two wins against Guilford Saturday afternoon, keeping its record spotless in ODAC play. The squad defeated the Quakers 8-4 in game one before downing them 5-2 in the second contest. With the win, the Marlins improve to 6-0 in conference play and 11-7 overall. Guilford slides to 10-9-1 on the year (1-4 ODAC).
GAME 1: VWU - 8 GC - 4
The first run of the day for either side came in the fourth as the Marlins' Randy Neisz drove a single up the middle that brought in an unearned run. After Guilford tied it up in the top of the sixth, VWU answered in a big way. Brandon Kussmaul led off with a homer over the centerfield fence to regain the lead. Two batters later, Neisz recorded his second RBI of the day as he plated himself with a home run over the right field fence.
The Marlins capitalized on a few Quaker mistakes in the following frame to score four more. The ball got rolling as a fielder's choice/error drove home Austin Obenour. The next batter, Kussmaul, was then walked with the bases loaded to drive in another. Next up was Zack Clark who was hit by a pitch, scoring Jordan Sprouse from third. The final run came by way of a passed ball. A final insurance run was plated in the eighth on a Corey King RBI single.
Jacob Pilarski picked up the win as he allowed just one run over the first 6.0 innings of the tilt. Andrew Lowe, Jay Crusemire and Adam Brooks combined to finish out the game, allowing just four more hits.
GAME 2: VWU - 5 GC - 2
Guilford got on the board first this contest, going up 2-0 after 3.5 innings. The Marlins chipped away at that though, beginning with a Pilarski RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.
Virginia Wesleyan regained the lead in the sixth beginning with a Daniel Petro single that scored Deon Hammond. Later in the frame a Kussmaul single through the left side would allow both Josh Hinson and Obenour. The final run of the day came by way of a Nick Ficarella RBI single to left field.
Chance Pauley had a terrific outing on the rubber, going 7.0 innings and only allowing six hits en route to the win. Glen Pizzanello finished out the final two frames, picking up his second save of the year in the process.
Baseball returns to action at 12 p.m. on Sunday as the team squares off against Tufts University at Kenneth R. Perry Field.
