Baseball Takes Nationally-Ranked Opponent to Extras In Home Defeat

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team fell to nationally-ranked Oswego State, 8-7, in extra innings Saturday afternoon at Kenneth R. Perry Field. With the loss, the Marlins go to 5-3 on the 2018 season.

Down, 1-0, after three innings of play, the Marlins made a splash in the bottom of the fourth. VWU plated two on a couple of Laker errors to take their first lead of the afternoon. Oswego would match that with a four-run performance in the following frame but the Marlins plated two more in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Corey King singled through the right side to get the ball rolling. Brady Fallon then reached on a bunt to put runners on first and second. A double would then knock both the runners home to make it a 5-4 game in Oswego's favor.

The following inning the Lakers put two more on the board, but VWU played determined and evened it up at seven in the bottom of the frame. Jacob Pilarski reached on a walk with one out and was moved to second as Austin Obenour took first on an error. . The bases then filled with a Daniel Petro walked and a King single sent the two in scoring position across the plate.

The game would go to the tenth and an Oswego run in the top of the frame would be the difference maker.

Jay Crusemire got the start on the hill, allowing four runs and striking out two through 4 complete innings. He was relieved by Andrew Lowe who pitched two and let up three. Nick Bay came in for one solid inning before Glen Pizzanello came in to finish the final three innings.

Baseball returns to the diamond at 10 a.m. on Sunday with a tilt against Ithaca College.
