Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team forged two wins on Friday, improving its record to 5-2 on the year. In game one, the Marlins shut out the College at Brockport Golden Eagles, 10-0, before taking down Alfred State by a score of 10-7 in game two.
GAME 1: VWU - 10 BROCKPORT - 0
After a scoreless first, the Marlins were able to tack on the first run of the game in the second. Corey King singled up the middle with one out and then advanced to second on a Isaac Guzman walk. Jordan Sprouse then doubled down the left field line to plate King from second. The following inning, VWU doubled their lead. Brandon Kussmaul doubled into left center and then stole third on the next at bat. One batter later, Zack Clark singled to drive home Kussmaul.
In the fourth, the squad doubled up its score again as Daniel Petro mashed one over the centerfield fence for a two run homer. the scoring trend continued as the team put up three more in the fifth. Deon Hammond got the frame going with a one out single and scored on the following at-bat as Clark doubled to left. King then knocked both Clark and himself home as he jacked one out of the park in center field to put the Marlins up 7-0.
The string of scoring continued into the sixth as Petro doubled to open up the stanza. He took third on a fly out and then reached home on a sacrifice fly by Austin Obenour. Kussmaul would then single and then steal second to put another runner in scoring position. Hammond doubled to switch places with his teammate and give the Marlins the nine-run advantage. Virginia Welseyan's final run of the day came in the seventh inning as Sprouse laid down a sac bunt to score King from third. The game was then called as the team's agreed upon a 10-run rule by the seventh mercy limit.
Jacob Pilarski earned the win on the mound as he went scoreless through the complete seven innings. The sophomore struck out three en-route to his second win of the year (2-0).
GAME 2: VWU - 10 ALFRED ST - 7
Game two went the distance for the Marlins beginning with a two run opening inning. King got the ball rolling with a double to center and was driven home by a Kussmaul double the following at bat. Hammond was up next and he took a ball to left field that allowed the runner from second to take home.
The Pioneers tied it up in the second but the Marlins immideately went back up with a three-run third inning. Brady Fallon, King and Kussmaul led the stanza off with back-to-back-to-back singles with Fallon scoring on the final one. An error in the outfield during the next at-bat allowed Kussmaul to reach home to give the Marlins their second run of the frame. Clark earned another RBI after that, sending Hammond home after he reached second on the previous error. A single, unearned run in the fourth then put the home squad up 6-3.
After the team's exchanged a run each in the sixth, Alfred tied it up in the next inning as they plated three of their own. Never backing down, the Marlins put up three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a Hammond two-run homer. That was all that was needed as the squad took home its second win in as many games.
Chance Pauley got the start for the Marlins, allowing four runs and striking out six through 6.0 innings. Adam Brooks relieved him but after allowing three runs, was replaced by Glen Pizzanello midway through the seventh. Pizzanello would finish out the game, and earn the win, as he dealt four K's through the final 2.2 innings.
As a team, the Marlins racked up 25 hits through the two games, 12 of which went for extra bags.
Baseball returns to action at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday with a game against nationally-ranked Oswego State.
