Distance Shooting Lifts Marlins over Hornets as Moore Sets School Record

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College men's basketball team connected for 16 3-pointers on Saturday afternoon to defeat Shenandoah University, 88-79, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

Khory Moore finished with five 3-pointers, giving him 280 for his career. His second three, coming with 15:31 left in the second half, set the all-time Virginia Wesleyan mark, passing TonTon Balenga '08 who finished his career with 276 3-pointers.

The contest went back and forth for much of the game with two ties and nine lead changes.

Shenandoah took its final lead of the game when Evan Bates connected for a three just 20 seconds into the second half to go up 36-34. Moore answered the next time down the floor, pouring in a 3-pointer to put Virginia Wesleyan back up for good.

Shenandoah managed to keep the game close, trailing 52-51 with 11:25 to play, but a crucial 18-2 Marlin run over the next four minutes put the Hornets away.

Lamont Steward started the run with a three, followed by a Khalil Barnette trifecta to put the guests up 58-51. Barnette scored on a layup in front of two 3-pointers, one from Tim Jones and another from Steward to extend the lead to 13 points, 66-53 with 8:02 to go. A pair of Moore free throws and a Steward layup capped off the run.

With 3:02 remaining, the contest was delayed by approximately 15 minutes as a double technical foul was called and both benches cleared. After the officials assessed the double technical, the game continued with each team having only the five players that were on the floor prior to the benches clearing.

Malcolm Clark led Shenandoah (6-11/2-6) with 24 points and six rebounds while Kalmonne Douglas tallied 10 points off the bench.

Moore led the Marlins with 34 points while Jones finished with 15 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

Virginia Wesleyan (13-4/6-2) hosts Randolph-Macon College (12-5/8-0) for an important ODAC contest Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
