Volleyball Wins First ODAC Match, Sweeps Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Wednesday's match started late due to a tornado warning, but the Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team ended the contest in quick fashion, needing just three sets to down Randolph College, 25-20, 25-19, 29-27.

The two squads started off even in the first set with the match tied at 12. The Marlins ran off four-straight points on a Randolph error, an Allison Mackley service ace, and kills by Doneisha Hall and Kristina Scott.

Randolph got no closer than two points the remainder of the set.

The second set was much tighter until late when the Marlins rallied for the ultimate 25-19 victory.

The WildCats led 23-20 in the third set when a Hall kill and two WildCat errors evened the score at 23-all.

A kill by Tiffany Barrett gave the Marlins match point, but Shelby Bergum was able to answer for Randolph to even it at 24. A Virginia Wesleyan error gave Randolph its first set point, but Barrett responded to tie it at 25.

Hall led the Marlins with a career-high 14 kills while Emilee Pierson poured in 40 assists and Allison Mackley tallied 19 digs.

Autumn Troxell and Rebecca Lesnak had 10 kills each for Randolph (2-12/0-4) while Brooks Gillerlain contributed 29 assists.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-9/1-2) travels to Washington and Lee Saturday for a pair of matches, facing the Generals at 11 a.m. before challenging Marymount (Va.) at 1:15 p.m.
