Early Lead Slips Away as W&L Downs Marlins

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team scored first Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell 2-1 to the defending ODAC champions, Washington and Lee University.

The Marlins scored early in the contest when Andrew Duenke played a ball into the box, finding Tanner Martin who put the ball into the low corner of the goal at the 7:56 mark of the first half.

That lead lasted until the second half when the powerful General offense struck for a goal in the 61st minute as Dylan Ritch found Oliver Dolberg to even the contest. Eight minutes later Andrew Kim fed the ball to Dylan Stroud for the game-winning tally.

Gillen Beck made one save for Washington and Lee (5-1) while Jay Fox finished with four stops for Virginia Wesleyan.

Washington and Lee maintained a 14-5 advantage in shots while holding a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

Virginia Wesleyan (2-3-1) hosts N.C. Wesleyan College (3-3) Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a non-conference start.
