Box Score Marlins Lose a Tough Match to CNU
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team lost a hard-fought contest to Christopher Newport University in a 3-0 non-conference decision Saturday night.
Both teams battled hard throughout the match as the Captains took advantage of two penalty kick scores to put the game away.
Sammy Blosser netted a penalty kick goal at the 16:22 mark of the first half while Jimmy Grace contributed a second penalty score eight minutes into the second half.
Hunter Johnson added a third goal at 71:27 when he took a throw-in, dribbled towards the top of the box and ripped a shot into the back of the net.
The Marlin defense did a good job of holding the Captain offense in check, limiting a CNU squad that had been averaging five goals per game. The Captains scored just once apart from the penalty kicks.
Jay Fox had a career night in the net for Virginia Wesleyan, stopping shot after shot and turning away multiple good opportunities for the Captains. He finished with a career-best nine saves on the night.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-2-1) travels to Averett University (1-3) on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
