Lynchburg's Strong Third Period Secures Victory over Marlins

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team was outscored 4-1 in the game's third period, which propelled Lynchburg College to a 17-11 victory in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) regular season contest.

The first period was tightly contested with each team tallying three goals. Josh Currier scored twice for the Marlins.

The second quarter belonged to Lynchburg's Aaron Murphy. The attackman scored three unassisted goals in the frame, which ultimately helped the Hornets' secure an 8-6 halftime lead.

Lynchburg came out of the intermission with a 4-0 run to give the Hornets a sizable cushion on a 12-6 lead as they headed into the final frame. The run came 28 seconds into the half and lasted until the 11:27 mark. The Hornets capitalized on man-up goals from Sean Ahearn and Evan Lombardo.

The Marlins only got one goal in the quarter, which came off the stick of Currier.

The final stanza resembled the first, as it was extremely close with Lynchburg and Wesleyan scoring five and four goals, respectively. This proved to be enough as the Hornets went on to victory.

Aaron Murphy paced Lynchburg (10-7/7-2) with five goals to go along with three assists. Chris Cornelius and Austin Stewart each found the back of the cage three times.

VWC (10-6/4-5) were led by Currier's six goals and three assists. John Roth scored twice and added two assists.

Lynchburg won 21-of-31 face-off attempts, but Virginia Wesleyan's Duncan Haight was 6-for-9 before leaving with an injury.

Virginia Wesleyan will enter the ODAC tournament next week as the No. 5 seed with a rematch with Lynchburg, the No. 4 seed, to look forward to.
