Box Score Marlins Fall to Tigers on Third Quarter Run
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan men's lacrosse team was outscored 5-1 in the third period, which led Hampden-Sydney College to a 16-10 victory in Wednesday night's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup.
The loss evens the Marlins' ODAC record at 4-4 with one game to play. VWC is currently fifth in the standings while Guilford and Randolph-Macon are both 3-5. Two of the three teams will make the ODAC tournament with positioning to be determined in Saturday's contests.
The Marlins were first on the board at 10:40 with a goal off the stick of Josh Currier, but the Tigers would respond a minute later with a goal from Ian Levin. Tyler Conn would add another for the Marlins at 5:43 as Hampden-Sydney would then score the last three goals to end the period.
Both Virginia Wesleyan and Hampden-Sydney would add three goals each to their tally in the second period, and the Tigers would lead the Marlins 8-5 into halftime.
Hampden-Sydney outscore the Marlins 5-1 in the third quarter by being the first to score at 13:59 off the stick of Levin. Currier scored an unassisted goal for the Marlins at 13:08.
The Marlins valiantly tried to fight their way back in the fourth with four goals from Currier, but the Tigers stayed strong leading them to a 16-10 victory over the Marlins.
Levin led the Tigers (12-5/7-2) with five goals. Hunter Brown netted four goals and three assists, while Chandler Shaheen had three goals and two assists.
Currier carried the Marlins with seven goals and one assist. He now has 105 points on the season, the second time in his career he has topped that plateau. His 338 career points move him into eighth all-time on the Division III scoring list.
Matt Baldwin would tack on two assists, while Duncan Haight corralled eight ground balls.
Virginia Wesleyan (10-5/4-4) will return home Saturday for their last regular season contest, a Senior Day matchup against Lynchburg College (9-7/6-2) at 1 p.m.
