Box Score Currier Breaks Single Season Goal Record as Marlins Race to Victory
ASHLAND, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team started strong, outscoring Randolph-Macon College 6-2 in the first period, and did not look back on the way to a 16-12 win in Wednesday night's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
Josh Currier entered the contest with 61 goals, one off the Marlin single season record set by Tom McCurty in 1995. He scored six in the contest to give him 67 for the season with three games left to play in the regular season.
The Marlins got on the board first, 10 seconds into the game, with a goal from Josh Currier to tie the record. Randolph-Macon responded a minute later with a goal off the stick of Coleman Adams. Wesleyan would then out score the Jackets 5-1 for the remainder of the quarter.
Corey Hilliard started the second period off with an unassisted goal at 14:18 for the Marlins. The Yellow Jackets and Marlins would trade goal for goal until halftime with each squad tallying three scores for the 9-5 halftime margin.
Trailing, the Yellow Jackets scored first at 13:39 in the third quarter off the stick of Miles Muncie. Justin Metzger answered three minutes later with a goal of his own, but the Jackets would keep the deficit close by continuing to score the rest of the period, keeping the match within three goals.
The Marlins attempted to run away in the fourth period by scoring the first five goals. The Jackets would answer with a goal at 5:20, but were unable to close the gap as the Virginia Wesleyan defense locked down the hosts
Muncie and Ryan Davidson led Randolph-Macon (3-11/2-4) with three goals apiece, followed by Nick Benhoff and Adams with two each.
Currier paced the Marlins with six goals and an assist while John Roth tied a career high with five goals. Duncan Haight had 11 ground balls for the Marlins as VWC won 20-of-32 face-off attempts.
