Box Score 2 Baseball Splits in Doubleheader with Roanoke
SALEM, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College baseball team rallied for a 7-6 victory in the first game of Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Roanoke College before falling 3-0 in game two.
Game 1: 7-6 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
Roanoke broke a four-all tie with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-RBI single off the bat of Will Decker.
Virginia Wesleyan cut the deficit in half in the top of the eighth as C.J. Lindsay's solo homer made it 6-5.
The Marlins took advantage of an error in the ninth to tie the contest. Justin Erby reached first on a fielding error after an initial out to start the inning. One out later, Brandon Kussmaul found a two-out situation with Erby on second. His single through the right side scored Erby to send the game to extra innings.
Back-to-back singles to open the 10th put the Marlins in a position to take the lead. An out moved the runners up a base where David Kennedy's fielder's choice groundout scored the winning run.
Nik Milvo had four hits while Erby scored three runs.
Game 2: 3-0 Roanoke Victory
Roanoke scored a run in the third on a Will Black single which is all the Maroons would need to win game two. The Maroons tacked on two more runs in the seventh, although only one was earned, to add the insurance scores.
Virginia Wesleyan had at least one runner on base in seven of the nine innings, but could not scrape across a run against Roanoke starter Rawlings Cumbea.
Cumbea (3-2) allowed four hits and three walks in seven innings while striking out seven.
Kussmaul went 2-for-3 for the Marlins in game two.
Virginia Wesleyan (16-9/10-5) travels to Mary Washington for a 3 p.m. start on Monday.
