Box Score Currier Makes History in 19-11 Victory
BUENA VISTA, Va. – Senior Josh Currier made Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) history Wednesday night, becoming the all-time points leader, in Virginia Wesleyan's 19-11 victory over Southern Virginia University.
Currier entered the contest with 288 points, two shy of the all-time record of 290 held by Matt Dugan who played for Washington and Lee University from 1998-01.
Currier collected put 289 on a man-up goal with 8:50 left in the first quarter to put the Marlins up 1-0. He assisted on a score by Cory Hilliard less than two minutes later to tie the all-time mark set by Dugan.
The record was all Currier's as the clock hit 2:51 left in the first. The senior found first-year Tyler Conn for a score that put the Marlins up 5-2. Currier added another score before the quarter ended as the Marlins carried a 6-2 lead into the second period.
Currier tied a career-high with seven goals in the game. Combined with his five assists, the senior finished with 12 points to far surpass his previous best of nine points.
Those 12 points, added to the 288 that Currier entered the game with, give him 300 career points. A historic milestone already in being the all-time points leader, Currier now is also the only men's lacrosse player in ODAC history to top the 300-point plateau.
Currier is just one of 23 players in Division III history to have 300 career points and one of just six to do it this decade. The most recent member of the 300-point club before Currier was Zach Davidson, a 2015 Castleton grad, who finished with 400 points, third-most all-time.
His 47 goals lead all of Division III this year while his 4.70 goals per game average is third-best.
Virginia Wesleyan and Southern Virginia were tied at seven as intermission ended. The Marlins outscored the Knights in the third and fourth quarter to pull away late in the contest for the final margin of victory.
Casey Rich had five goals for Southern Virginia (5-6), four of which came in the first half.
Conn joined Currier with four goals while John Roth tallied two goals and an assist. Duncan Haight won 15 of his 27 face-off attempts on the evening.
Virginia Wesleyan (7-3/1-2) is off for the next 10 days, traveling to Shenandoah University (4-6/0-3) on April 9 for a 1 p.m. Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
