Marlins Stumble 14-2 in Road Contest to Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Bridgewater College scored eight runs in the seventh inning to pull away from Virginia Wesleyan in a 14-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball contest Monday afternoon.

Bridgewater scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead on a two-run single off the bat of Kenner Berry.

Cavin Clyde produced a two-RBI single in the fourth followed by lone RBI base knocks from Berry and Chris King to take a 6-0 advantage on the Marlins.

Virginia Wesleyan attempted a rally in the fifth when Randy Neisz walked and C.J. Lindsay singled with one out to put runners on the corners. Matt Murray doubled down the line to score Neisz before Lindsay raced home on an RBI groundout by David Kennedy. Ryan Leake enduced an out of the next VWC batter to get out of the jam with just two runs allowed.

Bridgewater scored eight in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Dylan Horne and Brendan Howell provided the firepower in the inning as Horne cleared the bases on a triple while Howell connected for a two-run homer.

Leake (3-2) went eight innings for Bridgewater (16-9/7-3) to claim the win. He allowed five hits and four walks, while striking out two across 111 pitches.

Murray went 2-for-3 for the Marlins while Austin Gammon surrendered one earned run in 2 2/3 innings.

Virginia Wesleyan (13-7/7-3) travels to Emory & Henry College (6-19/2-7) Saturday for a noon ODAC doubleheader.
