Box Score Marlins Suffer First Defeat Of Season At Washington and Lee
LEXINGTON, Va.-- The Virginia Wesleyan men's lacrosse team was outscored five to zero in the second half on the way to the Marlins' first loss of the season, 10-3, against Washington and Lee Saturday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
The Marlins opened up the scoring less than five minutes into the first quarter when junior Matt Baldwin scored an unassisted goal. The game would not see another goal until seven seconds remained in the opening quarter, as the Generals Sam Dardani leveled the score.
The Generals started the second quarter strong, scoring two goals in the first minute by Graeme Weaver and Jack Clark. Sophomore Tyler Conn broke the Washington and Lee run with just under nine minutes to play in the opening half, scoring his first goal of the night. The Generals Max Hutson and A.J. Witherell would each post an unassisted tally over the next five minutes of play. Conn capitalized on the lone extra man opportunity of the night for the Marlins with six seconds remaining in the half, cutting the lead to two at the break.
Washington and Lee would not give up another goal, holding the Marlins scoreless in the second half. The Generals scored four goals in the third quarter, capped off by Witherell's second and third tallies. Joe Perella of the Generals scored the lone goal of the fourth quarter off a Weaver assist.
Witherell ended the night with three goals for Washington and Lee (5-2/2-0), while Perella added two.
Conn scored two goals for the Marlins, as senior Stephen Soltesz had four ground balls on the night. Virginia Wesleyan's man-down unit held the Generals scoreless on six man-up opportunities.
Virginia Wesleyan (6-1/1-1) is back in action Wednesday night as Christopher Newport comes to Virginia Beach for a 7 p.m. start at Birdsong Field.
