Box Score Marlins Move to 6-0 with Win in ODAC Opener
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team used a run in the middle of the game Saturday afternoon to defeat Guilford College 11-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.
Josh Currier started the scoring just 2:29 into the game on an unassisted tally. The Quakers attempted to close on Currier the remainder of the half, doubling him on most plays and sliding a third defender over when necessary.
That defense, combined with the Quakers' success in the face-off circle, helped them take a 3-1 lead late in the first quarter.
That is when the Marlin run started as Virginia Wesleyan scored seven of the game's next eight goals. The Marlin spurt started late in the first quarter on a Vasili Sidou goal and carried all the way into the fourth quarter as Justin Metzger scored off a Joe Couture assist for an 8-4 lead.
Five players scored in the key run for the Marlins, led by Cory Hilliard's two goals.
Guilford cut the deficit back to two goals on a pair of scores from Daniel Hughey and Cam Davis, but the Marlins would extend the gap back out to the final margin on goals from Brad Lill, Hilliard, and Currier.
Adam Fiore paced Guilford (1-4/0-1) with three assists as Zachary Berkowitz tallied a goal and an assist.
Currier had three goals and an assist for the Marlins while Hilliard added three goals.
Virginia Wesleyan (6-0/1-0) travels to Washington and Lee University (4-2/1-0) for a 7 p.m. ODAC start on Saturday, March 19.
