Marlins Break Even in Marlin Invite

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College baseball team concluded play in the Virginia Wesleyan Marlin Invitational on Sunday, defeating Ithaca College 7-2 before falling 10-2 to Oswego State.

Game 1 - 7-2 Virginia Wesleyan Victory

First-year Joe Bobiak (2-0) threw 5 2/3 innings in the first game of the afternoon, allowing two runs to Ithaca in the span. Austin Gammon and Nick Ott combined to one-hit Ithaca for the final 3 1/3 innings played while striking out three.

The Marlins scored three second-inning runs to jump ahead of the Bombers. A big seventh inning put the game on ice for Virginia Wesleyan. Ithaca committed seven errors in the game, resulting in two of the four seventh inning runs being unearned. Taylor Erby had the big knock in the frame, a two-RBI double down the right field line.

Justin Erby, Nik Milvo, and Brandon Kussmaul each posted two hits in the contest.

Game 2 - 10-2 Oswego State Victory

Oswego State scored one run in the first to get on the board quickly. The Marlins managed to knot the game in the bottom of the frame before the Lakers would pull away again. The score was already 3-1 in the second as Oswego State had the bases loaded and no one out. Eric Hamilton singled out to left where Deon Hammond scooped the ball and threw it home to try to throw out the runner attempting to score from second. C.J. Lindsay made the play, throwing back to third for out number two. Milvo saw some space at first base where Luke Chiasson applied the third out for the triple play.

Oswego State (4-0) scored four more runs in the seventh to go up 9-2.

Matt Murray had two hits for the Marlins. Gammon threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Virginia Wesleyan (3-2) hosts York (Pa.) College Friday at 2 p.m.
