Marlins and Quakers Draw in Late Game Thriller

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team ended in a dead heat with Guilford College Saturday evening in a match that concluded in two overtimes. The Marlins have now ended in a hard-fought draw for the second time out of the past three matches.

Senior Tanner Martin found the net early in the game connecting on a one touch pass after a throw in to center at the 28:54 mark. The rare double assist occurred at 28:54 when Alex Suprise took the throw-in, launched it in towards Tyler Pratt who one-touched the ball over to Martin for the 1-0 lead.

The first half belonged to the Marlins, as they maintained possession for most of the first 45 minutes of the match. Virginia Wesleyan totaled 13 shots in the first half compared to the Quakers six shots.

Guilford was able to eventually break through against the Marlins late in the second half when Christian Torres scored a goal at the 84:10 mark courtesy of teammate Ricky Aguilar who made a long pass from right midfield, just squeaking by the Marlins defense. The late Quaker goal tied the match up at 1-1 with overtime periods still to come.

Virginia Wesleyan's Ben Yount shot attempt was blocked by a Quakers defender at the 92:22 mark to start the overtime period. The Marlins played with great intensity on the defensive end which resulted in the Quakers only being able to get one shot on goal in the first overtime period.

In the second overtime period, Marlins goalie Jay Fox extended his arms out for a diving save from a shot taken by Guilford's Mark Dandanell at the 106:37 mark.

Eric Hayes earned 10 saves on the day for Guilford (5-7-3/0-3-3). Jay Fox totaled eight saves in the match, making this his second consecutive match with at least eight saves in goal for the Marlins.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-5-4/2-2-3) host familiar ODAC foe, Randolph-Macon (9-3-2/5-2) in an important matchup Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
