Volleyball Stumbles in W&L Tri-Match

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team dropped a pair of four-set matches on Saturday, to Washington and Lee University and Marymount (Va.) University.

3-1 Loss to Washington and Lee (25-20, 25-27, 25-19, 25-19)

The Marlins fell to one of the top teams in the ODAC this season as Washington and Lee (14-1/5-0) won in four sets.

The Generals took a 25-24 lead in the second set on a Meg Guignon kill, but Kristina Scott put away an Emilee Pierson assist to tie it up at 25. A pair of Washington and Lee attack errors gave the Marlins their lone set victory of the match.

Tiffany Barrett led the Marlins with 15 kills, while Pierson tied a career-high with 41 assists and Allison Mackley tallied a personal-best 27 digs.

3-1 Loss to Marymount (25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13)

Virginia Wesleyan fell in four games to Marymount (13-5), winning the second match in similar fashion to the W&L contest.

Marymount cut the deficit in the second set to 23-22, but Amber Matalus managed to even the match for Virginia Wesleyan. The freshman, Matalus, sent down a kill for a 24-22 lead before her service ace gave the win to VWC.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-11/1-3) hosts Randolph-Macon College (12-4/5-0) Wednesday at 7 p.m.
