Marlins Drop One Game Total in a Pair of Saturday Wins

WINCHESTER, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team dropped just one game in a pair of Saturday victories, over Shenandoah University and Marymount (Va.) University.

Shenandoah - W, 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 30-28)

The Marlins stayed undefeated in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play with a four-set victory over Shenandoah in Saturday's first match.

The pair of teams fought through the first two games, each winning one, before Virginia Wesleyan pulled away for a third-set victory. VWC led throughout the third set, despite a 6-6 tie, after which the Marlins scored six-straight points for a 12-6 edge.

Shenandoah rallied after the big loss to challenge the Marlins in game four, battling to 30-28 before Virginia Wesleyan ultimately prevailed on a Tiffany Barrett kill and attack error by the Hornets.

The Marlins got 18 kills from Barrett to go along with 22 assists from Emilee Pierson and 24 digs by Marin Crowder.

Shenandoah (7-6/2-2 ODAC) was led by Anna Gallup's 12 kills as Jasmine Callahan had 25 assists and Brandi Griffith posted 25 digs.

Marymount (Va.) - W, 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-17)

Virginia Wesleyan finished the day with a 3-0 victory over Marymount after grinding through a tough first game. The Marlins held Marymount to a .098 hitting percentage for the match.

Morgan McAlpin had nine kills for Marymount (11-5) while Caroline Hanson had 17 assists and Courtney Phung contributed 17 digs.

Rosalind Ludovici and Maddy McMurry each posted eight kills for Virginia Wesleyan as Kirstin Sessoms posted 13 assists. Crowder led VWC with 17 digs as Barrett finished with 16.

Virginia Wesleyan (12-6/4-0) hosts a tri-match on Saturday, October 3 as Washington and Lee University and the University of Mary Washington travel to Virginia Beach for matches starting at 11 a.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend.
