Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins had runners on second and third bases in Friday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament game at City Stadium, but could not find the hit to bring them home.
In fact, the second-seeded Marlins' usually productive bats were quiet most of the game as Virginia Wesleyan recorded just four hits in a 5-0 loss to third-seeded Randolph-Macon College. VWC falls into the loser's bracket and will play again on Saturday, April 24 at a time to be determined.
ODAC Rookie of the Year Randy Spiers picked up the pitching win for the Yellow Jackets (24-7), striking out five batters and walking two. He gave up a single to Taylor Erby (Norfolk/Lake Taylor)and walked ODAC Player of the Year Zach Bach (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) in the bottom of the fourth, as the Marlins sparked their only scoring threat of the contest. But, the Jackets, who led 3-0 at the time, picked up the third out in the inning to avoid any scoring.
R-MC rode its 3-0 lead all the way into the top of the ninth inning when the Jackets plated two more runs to pad the score.
Justin Erby (Norfolk/Lake Taylor), Matt Murray (Nottingham, Pa./Quarryville Solanco), and Josh Mason (Chesapeake/Bishop Sullivan Catholic) all singled for the Marlins. Rookie Nick Bay (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox)pitched eight innings for VWC, striking out two, walking one and allowing nine hits. Kyle Piper (Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam) and Dylan Stoskus (Ashburn/Arlington Bishop O'Connell) both pitched for the Marlins in the final inning.
