Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A four-goal run by in the second half by Virginia Wesleyan College's men's lacrosse team helped catapult the Marlins to a 10-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the host Guilford College Quakers on Saturday.
The victory improved VWC's overall record to 9-4 and its ODAC record to 6-1, keeping the Marlins currently in second place in the league with two more games remaining.
VWC's timely scoring in the game was complemented by another standout effort in goal from senior Rory Finnegan (Lowell, Mass./Lowell). Guilford fired 60 shots in the game and Finnegan stopped 28 of them, recording the second highest total of his career and the third highest total in VWC history.
Guilford (9-4, 3-4) tied the game at 4-all in the waning minutes of the second quarter, but Virginia Wesleyan took the lead for good when junior Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Name-The Hill School) put in an unassisted goal with 5:06 remaining before halftime.
His goal was the first of four straight for the Marlins, who outscored the Quakers 3-0 in the third quarter to take an 8-4 lead into the final quarter. Rookie Nick Zepko (Edgewater, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and seniors John Roth (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River) did the third-quarter scoring for VWc, with Pappetti firing his shot in with seven seconds on the clock.
Guilford enjoyed a brief rally when Chandler Zirkle (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) tallied back-to-back goals early in the fourth to cut the VWC lead to 8-6. But, Papettie and senior Tim Gunn (Sparks, Md./Hereford) both scored for the Marlins in the final minutes to help ice the win.
Roth led scoring for VWC with three goals, while Papetti and Currier added one each. Senior Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) also goaled for the Marlins, who received assists from six different players.
Zirkle finished as the scoring leader for Guilford with three goals.
Virginia Wesleyan closes out the regular season at home with two games, beginning on Wednesday, April 22, when the Marlins host Hampden-Sydney College at 7 p.m.
