GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A first place finish in the javelin throw by Nikki Burns, a record-setting effort by Shakira Mills in the 100 meter dash, and a record-tying jump by junior Ed Chase highlighted Virginia Wesleyan College's results in competition at the Aggie Invitational hosted by North Carolina A&T University.
Burns (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional), topped a field of 27 javelin throwers with a distance of 124 feet, 2 inches. She set the VWC record earlier this season with a throw of 129-7 at the Dr. Harry Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College.
Mills (Hampton/Bethel) rewrote her own record in the 100, finishing the sprint in 12.63 seconds, topping the time of 12.66 she set in 2013. Her time is currently the second fastest among all Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) athletes in the event.
Chase (Falls Church/J.E.B. Stuart), who set VWC's high jump record at 6-2.75 in 2013, cleared that height again at A&T to place sixth overall in the competition. He currently ranks second in the ODAC.
Senior Liz Wade (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) turned in a first-place showing in her section of the 1,500 meter run and placed fourth overall. She covered the distance in a time of 5:06.90. Sophomore Emily Latimer (Moyock, N.C./Currituck) placed ninth overall in the race with a time of 5:16.45.
Senior Dan Elmore (Warrenton/Fauquier) moved into the top three ODAC leaders in the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 50.32. He placed 15th in a field of 44 sprinters, followed in closely by sophomore Trey White (Spotslyvania/Courtland) who placed 17th with a time of 50.52. Senior Shakiella Daniel (Suffolk/Lakeland) fared best among the VWC women in the same event, placing ninth in a field of 33 with a season-best time of 59.16, which currently ranks fourth in the ODAC.
Daniel also ran the anchor leg for the Marlins' 4x100 relay, which placed fifth in a time of 49.38.
