Marlins drill 30 hits in conference sweep at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Hitting was consistent from one game to another on Sunday for the Virginia Wesleyan College baseball Marlins who banged out 30 hits in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep at Guilford College.

The Marlins connected for 20 hits in a 13-1 decision over the Quakers in the first game, and followed that with 10 hits in an 8-4 win in the nightcap.  While VWC improved to 3-1 overall and to 3-0 in the ODAC, Guilford dropped to 4-9 and 1-4.

Eight Marlins recorded at least one hit in each contest, connecting for 11 extra-base hits overall.  Sophomore C.J. Lindsay (Remington/Bealeton Liberty) emerged with a 6-for-11 day, belting a triple in the first game and a double and triple in the second.  Junior Matt Murray (Nottingham, Pa./Quarryville Solanco) also produced a 6-of-11 afternoon, highlighted by a 5-of-6 showing, with a double, in the opener.

Seniors Zach Bach (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) and Josh Mason (Chesapeake/Virginia Beach Bishop Sullivan Catholic) drilled a home run each.  Bach hit 3-for-6 in the first game, knocking out a double as well as his homer.  Mason came through for his big blast in the second game.  Rookie Randy Neisz (Richmond/J.R. Tucker) contributed with a pair of triples, one in each game, senior Jordan Miller (Chesapeake/Grassfield) tripled in the second game, and sophomoreJustin Erby (Norfolk/Lake Taylor) doubled in game two.

VWC never trailed in the series, opening each game with a three-run first inning. The Marlins led 5-0 in the opener before Guilford hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. But, VWC answered in the top of the fifth with five runs, helped by a Neisz triple and back-to-back doubles from Erby and Bach.

The Marlins also led 5-0 in the second game before giving up a Guilford run in the bottom of the third. VWC opened up an 8-1 lead with a three-run fourth inning, which started with Mason's home run to right field. Linsday also tripled in the inning.

Guilford closed the gap with a three-run seventh, but managed only one hit in the last two innings.

Both teams used a variety of pitchers, as five Marlins took the mound in the first game, while Guilford used four hurlers. SeniorDylan Stoskus (Ashburn/Arlington Bishop O'Connell) took the pitching win, working two innings and allowing just a walk. Rookie Nick Bay (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox)started for the Marlins and worked four innings, striking out one and surrendering two walks and three hits.  John Todd (Falls Church, Va./Bishop Ireton) pitched the first four innings for Guilford and took the loss.

Virginia Wesleyan and Guilford used three pitchers each in the second game. Junior Sean Greiser (Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam)pitched for the Marlins in the first six innings and struck out 11 batters.  He walked five and gave up just two hits and an earned run. Chase Shuford (Matthews, N.C./Porter Ridge) took the loss. He pitched three innings, striking out three and surrendering seven hits and four walks.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Tuesday, March 10, hosting Marymount University in a single game beginning at 2 p.m.
