Late runs lift Marymount to 6-3 win over Marlins

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH -- There was no truth to the rumor that a moving walkway was installed to the pitchers' mound for Tuesday's non-conference baseball game between the Marymount University Saints and the Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins.

But, it must have seemed that way as no less than 14 pitchers were used in the contest, which produced a 6-3 victory for the Saints.  Marymount (4-3) ended a 3-all tie with a solo run in the top of the eighth inning and pulled away for the win with two runs in the top of the ninth.

After connecting for 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Guilford College on Sunday, Virginia Wesleyan (3-2) managed only four hits off six Marymount pitchers one day later. Senior Zach Bach (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) led the effort with a double.  Junior Matt Murray (Nottingham, Pa./Quarryville Solanco), sophomore Taylor Erby (Norfolk/Lake Taylor), and sophomore Austin Gammon (North Chesterfield/Lloyd C. Bird) recorded  a single each.

Brandon Padgett (Springfield/West Springfield) and Jack Breheny (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga Prep) connected for two hits each for Marymount.

Collin Bazemore (Mechanicsville/Atlee) recorded the longest stay on the mound, pitching four innings for the Saints.  He struck out three batters, walked three, and gave up one run.

Sophomore Nick Ott (Virginia Beach/Bishop Sullivan Catholic) was the starting pitcher for VWC, which used eight men on the mound. The Marlins combined to strike out three batters, walking seven, and surrender eight hits.  VWC was also hurt by five errors.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Wednesday, March 11, hosting Marymount again in a single game slated to begin at 2 p.m.
